Experience

I have been an ESL instructor and English Language mentor for ten years. I have worked as a newspaper editor and journalist. I have six grown children, and have spent 15 years as a home educator. I have worked extensively with students of all ages. I especially enjoy the opportunity to tutor and encourage adult students. I work as an educational researcher, developing curricula that is cognitively compatible. My research in Cognitive Linguistics looks at the student as a whole, observing the connection between the mind and the body with regard to learning. Students take in new information, integrate it with their unique prior experience, develop a personal understanding that is unique, then act upon the concept. Learning experiences must be relevant and emotionally engaging in order for the student to effectively retain and recall them from memory.

Hobbies

In addition to teaching and research, I am a certified Yoga Instructor and teach breathing and meditation to reduce stress. I hold an Art Minor in ceramic art, and I sell pottery locally. I believe that the manner in which a subject is taught will determine the student's success. Teaching in an environment that imparts joy and encouragement sets the student up for future success in that subject.
