Experience
My name is Cormac Nolan, and I am a 2020 graduate from Saint Ignatius High School. I will be majoring in Cognitive Neuroscience at Washington University in St. Louis next year. Part of my fascination with the brain is how we form memories and learn new skills. This passion has led to me continually researching and implementing best practices in learning and memory. Here is what I’ve learned. First, our brains are plastic, meaning they are constantly rewiring when we expose them to new stimuli. The practical implication of this is the understanding that we are not stuck with the brain we have. People can rewire their brains to overcome paralysis or blindness. In the same way, anyone can overcome struggles or get ahead in school with the right techniques. Research has shown that the most effective techniques revolve around three basic principles for optimal long-term learning: spaced repetition, interleaving of topics, and active recall. These are the principles that have allowed me to obtain a top GPA, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National Merit Commended Scholar awards and are the principles I will implement in my tutoring. I have experience in tutoring for the ACT and have instructed a chemistry lab course for 6th-grade students at the Welsh Academy. Moreover, I have been involved in the varsity track and swimming programs, student senate, National Honors Society, Labre ministry, mission collection team, and model united nations. I can tutor in all core subjects, Latin, and the ACT. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to set up a meeting.
